"Teen Angel" is a teenage tragedy song written by Jean Dinning and her husband, Red Surrey.
It was performed by Jean's brother, Mark Dinning, and released in October 1959.
The record was not an instant success, with some radio stations in the U.S. banning the song, considering it too sad.
Nevertheless, despite the reluctance of radio stations, the song continued to climb the charts.
In the last week of 1959, the single jumped from #100 to #50 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
It went on to reach #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 (February 1960) and #37 in the UK Singles Chart (even though it was banned from being played by the BBC).
Billboard ranked it as the #5 song of 1960.

@onefortheroad She was always a little 'slow'...looking around in the dark for a high school ring when a train is coming on the track? Come on...you were lucky---your kids may have been as or even more slow in the cranial area than her. Why didn't you save her...I mean she could have used a hero at that time. My, my... Well, you sang the 'snot' out of this classic with passion, vocal emoting warmth standing clear of the tracks yelling 'look out!!!' How can you sleep?

@joyceishere I hadn't thought about Feb 3rd at all in relationship to this song. I think you are right. Teen Angel, Last Kiss, Tell Laura I Love Her...were all written after the "Day the music died". How insightful you are, Joyce! I was feeling the emotion in the lyrics as I was singing it. The only tear though was in my beer.....lol

@jerry How can you say that about Betty Lou. She was a cheerleader. She was really good in Home Economics. She was good at other things , too....but, we won't go there....lol If I tried to save her, I would have died, too. Then, who would have sung this tribute song to her? Good thing somebody was thinking ahead....lol I sleep very well, thank you.....right next to her sister....lol

@onefortheroad You can't get a girl that smart-- so I checked it out. Her real name is Betty Boop! The 'other things' she did gave her a guilty feeling, so she jumped in front of the train. The train's side digital camera caught you leaning against a pole drinking beer at the time. You and her sister had this planned...A news report on 20/20 last week told all. They caught you sneaking out with your own cousin! How sick you really are!

@jerry Yeah, but I had a Million Dollar life insurance policy out on her. Me and Candy (her stripper sister) lived high on the hog on that money. Took a trip around the world. 20/20 is overrated. They are big fans of the Communist News Network (CNN). They "report" what they think you want to hear. That train photo was in black and white back then and you couldn't tell me from Adam with that pic! Everybody thinks Candy and I planned all this but it was just one BIG coincidence, really!
