"If You Could Read My Mind" is a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. Lightfoot wrote the lyrics while he was reflecting on his own divorce. It reached No. 1 on the Canadian Singles Chart on commercial release in 1970 and charted in several other countries on international release in 1971.
Lightfoot has cited his divorce for inspiring the lyrics, saying they came to him as he was sitting in a vacant Toronto house one summer. At the request of his daughter Ingrid, he performs the lyrics with a slight change: The line "I'm just trying to understand the feelings that you lack" is altered to "I'm just trying to understand the feelings that we lack." He has said in an interview that the difficulty with writing songs inspired by personal stories is that there is not always the emotional distance and clarity to make lyrical improvements such as the one his daughter suggested.

Mark Foote: @joyceishere Yes, it is in fact Joyce. You have such a great memory. I've recorded some Simply Red, Neil Young, and The Dave Clark Five. Ha ha. I'm all over the place. I only work a few days a week now but as you know, find such pleasure singing with my spare time. So glad you liked it Joyce. TY... ~Mark~

Mark Foote: @laurie Ah TY so much for sharing your feedback and thoughts. I know it was written by Gordon expressing his feelings about the divorce he had gone through. Sometimes trying to express feelings with our voices is challenging. TY for coming Laurie. ~Mark~

NoBody: @markstunes Gordon family married into my family. Not directly, but with 2 people between our families. Too bad he was not blood related. But I will take him being an in-dir, in-law. Like his music too.

Mark Foote: @jerry Hi Jerry.. Its funny you mentioned God. Ran into a parishioner yesterday and some of their first words were "when are you gonna return to singing for us" . When I sang for the church, or God should we say, it was always sincere and almost personal standing before 8 to a 1000 people at times . Been hard since Mom died. So lately I just sit at home in my songs and sing to you folks. Your such a talented singer yourself buddy. Coming from you means more then you know. Thanks Jerry. ~Mark~
