This love song about a budding romance is the first single from Blake Shelton's sixth studio album. The American country singer took a break from his co-hosting duties at the ACM Awards held on April 3, 2011 to debut the rockin', up-tempo tune. It was made available for download following the live telecast and immediately shot to #1 on the iTunes Country Singles Chart.
The track was written by Rhett Akins and Ben Hayslip, whose previous collaborations include Shelton's hit "All About Tonight," which they wrote with Dallas Davidson.
Shelton's performance at the ACM Awards of "Bee" created a great deal of buzz, resulting in the song debuting at #13 on the Hot 100. This was the highest bow for a male country soloist on the chart in the 21st century.
The 139,000 downloads sold in the single's debut week of release was the best ever sales week for a lead solo country male artist to date. It surpassed the 100,000 that Trace Adkins' "You're Gonna Miss This" achieved in April 2008, following his second-place finish on The Celebrity Apprentice.
The song came about as a result of a happy accident when Akins and Hayslip were struggling for ideas. Akins was flipping through a Billboard magazine, and came across an article about former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee recording some music. "I thought it said 'Huckleberry,'" he recalled to Taste of Country. "I said, 'Well let's write a song about huckleberry … 'I'm your huckleberry.' That turned into 'honeysuckle,' but we didn't know what it meant. Then it turned into 'honeysuckle / honey bee.'"
By its seventh week, the song had gone digital Gold, making it the fastest single by a male country soloist to sell over 500,000 digital copies.
Shelton told The Boot why he felt the song had connected so quickly with fans and radio alike. "It's a combination of everything that's going on with me right now, that people want to talk to me about," he said. "I just got married and it's a positive love song about being someone's partner, and The Voice. All these things create momentum... I think more than anything it's just a really good song. It's that song that you hope to get once in your career, and for whatever reason, it's a no-brainer. You don't have to think that hard about it. It's just fun and people like to hear it."
