Back in 1969, many songs came out that engulfed the drug culture in one way or another, and when this song came out, many, including me, thought it was another one of those songs. When the song was released, some listeners thought James was referring to LSD, which was often sold in high-quality blue tablets at the time. WRONG! According to James's manager, James was actually inspired by his readings of the Book of Ezekiel, which (he remembered as) speaking of a blue Shekhinah light that represented the presence of the Almighty God, and of the Book of Isaiah and Book of Revelation, which tell of a future age of brotherhood of mankind, living ...
