"The Cowboy in the Continental Suit" is a country song written and performed by Marty Robbins, released in May 1964.
The song, which reached #3 on the charts, tells a story of a city-dressed man who surprises onlookers by successfully riding a notoriously difficult bucking horse named "The Brute".
It was featured on the 1964 album Saddle Tramp
A stranger in a fancy city suit ("continental suit") arrives to ride "The Brute," a notoriously tough horse.
Despite the onlookers' skepticism of his appearance, he rides the horse successfully and leaves, proving not to judge by clothes.
Released as a single in May 1964 from the album Saddle Tramp, it peaked at #3.
The song was written entirely by Marty Robbins.
The song is known for its detailed storytelling and steady, narrative-driven cadence.
The lyrics follow the stranger, who claims to be from "Highland Rim," as he shocks the crowd by handling the 1500-pound horse with ease.
