This track is from a vid and was background music. I cut/pasted/edited a mere 20 seconds of it to create this backing (that's all there was). I didn't consciously realize it was just about Memorial Day when I wrote/edited it. I usually work on a song more to get it acclimated better. This was one take and I had never sang it even once. It was just in my head. It is my humble tribute to the men and women who have served this great country I have been blessed to be born and raised in.

It will be interesting to see if any realize who/what this song is about ;) I put the lyrics in because my sing might not express them clearly.

Update: This song is about Audie Murphy. He hailed from TX, was 5 foot 5, lied about his age to enlist in WW2, won every medal for valor the US can give, including the Medal of Honor. The pic for this song is the logo for his 3rd infantry division, "The Rock of the Marne". He became a Hollywood actor and starred in the movie "To Hell and Back" playing himself in the film version of his autobiography of the same title. He was wounded 3 times and suffered from PTSD the rest of his days. Twenty six years after the war a small private plane he was a passenger in crashed into a mountain ending his days. When asked why he showed such courage in battle, he replied, "They were killing my friends".

verse 1

He came on out
of Texas way

Uncle Sam said
you must save the day

Five foot five
but ten feet tall

Only God knew
he would hear the call

chorus
He was marching to hell
....and back

verse 2

A year too young
he left the farm

Rock blue and white
covered his arm

Blue and gold honors
covered his chest

Only God knew
he would be the best

chorus
He was dragged into hell
....and back

verse 3

A Texas boy
among the stars

A purple heart
hid hero scars

Only 45
and fate would call

Only God knew
plane would fall

chorus
He was taken from hell
....and back

Joyce Dorrance: @aragorn Hi Paul.. Alot of heroes have come from to Texas in history- I am not sure who this song is about though.. Your vocals have an edgy roughness to them that works so well on this

Aragorn: @joyced As I updated, this is a tribute to Audie Murphy. The song title is strongly associated with him. He was a great American hero who survived the hell of war, only to perish in a plane crash. Thanks so much for the kind comment, Joyce :)

Aragorn: @abbygail25 Yes, Audie was a great hero. He would be appalled by all those hating on our country these days. They clearly don't know how fortunate they are. Thanks, Gail :)
