"Pick Me Up On Your Way Down" is a classic country song written by Harlan Howard.
Originally recorded by Charlie Walker in 1958, it became the first major hit for Howard, who witnessed a lovers' quarrel in a honky-tonk that inspired the lyrics.
The song tells the story of an ex-lover who has abandoned their roots for a fancier crowd, with the narrator warning that her new friends will eventually tire of her and suggesting she stop by to see him when she "tumbles" back down.
The iconic lyrics capture the warning: "Pick me up on your way down, when you're blue and all alone / When their glamour starts to bore you, come on back where you belong.
The song's success opened doors for Harlan Howard, cementing his legacy as one of country music's most prolific songwriters, eventually seeing 147 of his compositions become hits.
While Charlie Walker took the track to #2 on the Billboard country charts, the track has since been covered by numerous country music legends, including Buck Owens and Ray Price.
