I recently came across an analogy that changed the way I think about the music I record.......and often discard!

"A portrait photographer can retouch every wrinkle, every freckle and every tiny blemish until the image is technically perfect. But in doing so, they often remove the very things that make the face unique and human"

I think folk music is much the same.

With little more than a voice and a guitar, there is nowhere to hide. Every nuance and every tiny imperfection is exposed. That used to bother me until I realized that perhaps a little humanity tells the story better than technical perfection.

Empty Chairs is one of those songs. It has always been one of my favorite Don McLean songs, and I hope, when you listen, you hear the story more than the imperfections!
