Happy Halloween and Day of the Dead, everyone!

We went out to NYC Saturday night for some Halloween karaoke. It was at a place called Sid Gold's Reserve Room, which is a karaoke piano bar! My husband and I were there with my old friend Corrie, her ex-husband, and my friend Mark Katzoff, who I know from JOLT but have met up with many times IRL. Anyway, it has the same problem as so many other popular karaoke bars: too many singers. There was no one when we got there at 8, but it got pretty crowded. It's fun singing with a great piano player like the one last night (he even sung harmonies!). Nice to try something different. I was in costume as a hippie, so I only sung songs from before 1970. He had many great songs, but not the ones I had hoped to sing, for the most part. It went well, though. I sang this one, "Downtown" by Petula Clark and did "I Got You Babe" by Sonny & Cher with Mark. Anyway, if you ever get to do piano bar karaoke, it's a lot of fun! I do still prefer live band karaoke to any other kind, but that is hard to find, especially on a particular night.

The pants I'm wearing are also art! I've been taking college drawing and painting classes for the last few years. Last semester, for Painting II, for our final project, we were told that we could paint anything, as long as it wasn't on regular canvas. The students were very creative. One painted on an old TV, one girl painted her legs, one painted a T-shirt, a few painted on cardboard with unusual shapes...they were great. Anyway, I had these old jeans that I loved, but they were frayed. First, I sewed them up as best I could. The hems were not good, so I bought some flowery material scraps to make new hems for the pants. At the art supply store, I bought some acrylic fabric paint markers, and some iron-on and stick-on patches. I used the markers to draw designs on the pants. Some of the patches I bought were small Van Gogh paintings, so I wrote some lyrics from the song "Vincent" and drew some of his paintings on the pants. I also got some more iron-on patches from Amazon, especially sunflowers, other flowers and butterflies. Not all of them stayed on, so then I used some gorilla glue as well. The back side was more about flower power, All You Need Is Love and more. I only wear these pants occasionally, but they worked great for Halloween. I bought a fringed vest, which also came with a peace sign necklace, the sunglasses, the headband and more. I already had the Janis Joplin T-shirt.

Anyway, hope you enjoy this! It's been about 10 years since I last sung it. I sang it a lot when we lived in Hawaii back then. I hope you all had a great and fun weekend!
