The story of how she felt the afternoon we met, on the trolley,
as related to me at a later time.

With her high starched-collar and her high-topped shoes
And her hair piled high upon her head
She went to lose a jolly hour on the trolley
And lost her heart instead

With my light brown derby and my bright green tie
I was quite the handsomest of men
She started to yen so she counted to ten
Then she counted to ten again

Clang, clang, clang went the trolley
Ding, ding, ding went the bell
Zing, zing, zing went my heart strings
From the moment she saw me she fell

Chug, chug, chug went the motor
Bump, bump, bump went the brake
Thump, thump, thump went her heart strings
When I smiled she could feel the car shake

I tipped my hat, and took a seat
I said I hoped I hadn't stepped upon her feet
I asked her name, she held her breath
She couldn't speak because I scared her half to death

Buzz, buzz, buzz went the buzzer
Plop, plop, plop went the wheels
Stop, stop, stop went her heart strings

As I started to leave
She took hold of my sleeve with her hand
And as if it were planned
I stayed on with her and it was grand just to stand
With her hand holding mine to the end of the line
