Many of Walter Brennan' recordings give recognition to people, places and things. The themes often are similar to other songs, sometimes a spoken version of a well known song.
This is another adaptation of a Brennan recording.
The Old Blacksmith Shop
You know, I used to wake-up bright and early, on a Saturday morning.
To the sound of a hammer hitting steel.
From a blacksmith shop, where ol' Jake kept busy,
fixin' a plow or maybe a wagonwheel.
Now the ringing of that anvil, meant no school today,
cause through the week he opened up late.
But on a Saturday morning, folks came to town early
an brought what needed fixin' to ol' Jake.
Now he was a mountain of a man,
an to a boy like me. He was 10 feet tall, in my eyes.
An in a fight, they said it was a sight to see.
That strong right arm, cut a man down to size.
You could always tell he was workin' real hard,
cause he'd be raisin' the roof with some ol' song.
And on the way down there, by the sound of his hammer,
I'd try to figure out just what he was workin' on.
He'd be swinging that hammer, fixin' a plow or shapin' a piece of steel.
Just a ringin' that anvil, I can hear em now, a fixin' a wagon wheel
I guess I finally out-growed that ol' blacksmith shop, an the town did too,
down through the years, but ol' Jake kept it open til the day he died.
An on a Saturday morning, now and then I could hear, ol' Jake swingin' that hammer,
a fixin' a plow or shapin' a piece of steel.
Just a ringin' that anvil,
I can hear em now, fixin' a wagonwheel.
I can hear em now,
a fixin' a wagonwheel.
