As requested by Jerry, to do Walter Brennan's version of "Old Shep". Had to assemble backing with his and other's.

Now when I was a lad and
old shep was a pup,
Over hills and valleys
we strayed
Just a boy and his dog
we were both full of fun
We growed up together
that way
I remember the time
at the old swimming hole
I would have drowned
beyond doubt
But old shep was right there
to the rescue he came
And he jumped in and
helped dragged me out
Now the years rolled along
and at last he grew old
His eyesight was
fast growing dim
Then one day the doctor
looked at me and said
I can do no more
for him Jim
So with trembling hand
I picked up my gun
And aimed it at Shep's
faithful head
But I just couldn't do it
I wanted to run
I wished they would
shoot me instead
So I threw down that old gun
and run right up to his side
He laid his faithful old head
right on my knee
And friends I stroked the
best pal a man ever found
And I even cried
so I scarcely could see
Now old shep he knew
he was going to go
Cause he reached down
and licked at my hand
And he looked up at me
just as much as to say
I hate it to
but you understand

(singing)

Now old Shep is gone
where the good doggies go
And no more with
old shep will I roam
But if dogs have a heaven
there is one thing I know
Old Shep has
a wonderful home

Jerry: Jerry: @qwirky Brother, you perfectly captured all the emotions in this story/song....Truly, I have chills listening. My Mother, who grew up on a dry land farm, told me, as a 10-year old girl, she was sitting outside petting her dog when a car came down the dirt road. Her dog ran out in the ditch to bark at the car and the driver when into the ditch and ran over her dog and drove on (continued)

Jerry: Jerry: @qwirky not stopping. The dog, near death, crawled out of the ditch as she ran, crying, to her friend. Mom sat down on the ground and the dog snuggled up to her, laying his head in her lap, and died. She was shattered and never forgot the pain she felt from this tragic, mean spirited event.

Qwilleran: @jerry Okay Jerry. The photo of me and my dog, Blackie. We moved from a plat, outside of town, to an in town. Shorter version, she got hit by a car and was injured badly. There was an attempt to do just what the song says, pistol a not rifle. Couldn't so she was taken to be euthanized.
