Just a week ago today,
we rode into Abilene.
Trail drive was over,
we had money in our jeans.
The trail dust was settled,
the hard work was done
My best friend and me,
went lookin' for some fun.
Our thirst was so heavy
from the long hard drive.
We drank to our friendship,
how we waited for this night,
Little did we know
as we held our glass aside.
That before morning came,
one of us was to die.

It was just a foolish argument,
it started out in fun,
But as we drank, we got to braggin'
of who had the fastest gun.
We kept right on a drinkin',
the spark of anger grew,
and in a drunken rage of violence,
we both jumped up and drew.
His hand was fast as lightening,
I was beaten, I could see.
But he couldn't pull the trigger,
cause he thought so much of me.
It all happened so quickly
and I couldn't stop my draw.
With tears in my eyes,
it's the last thing he saw.
