"Lead" On is the 6th and title track to George Strait's 15th Studio Album "Lead On" released in 1995. This song was released as a single in 1995 and reached Number 7 on the charts.
I am not sure what the songwriter had in mind when writing this but, the distinct impression I got was that the couple in the song, broke up and the guy was gone a long time and this is his first day back.

This song feels like these 2 people knew each other in the past and are pretending to meet each other for the 1st time. That's my take on these lyrics.
