This song sounds like it's about a wife or girlfriend (as portrayed in the music video), but Josephine (Josie) is Chris Rea's first daughter, born in 1983. She is the blue in his sky who gave his life meaning.
Rea makes a strong connection with this song every time he performs it. "When I'm on stage, I kind of shut my eyes when I'm singing and I'm always where I wrote the song," he said in a Songfacts interview. "I'm always on the third floor of the Intercontinental Hotel in Dusseldorf in Germany and it's raining. That's where I am when I sing that song, every time."
